I was reading through my RSS feeds, and found a really interesting article on Zombie computers: Attack of the Zombie Computers Is Growing Threat.

According to the article among 11% of the over 650 million computers currently connected to the internet contain botnet software. Think about it. One out of ten, 65 million computers, are controlled by hackers. That is an amazing and horrifying number.

Botnet software pose one of the greatest threats on the internet today. Botnets can among other things be used for:
  • Spamming
  • Phishing
  • DDOS attacks
  • Bruteforce attacks

Furthermore, a hijacked PC can be used to empty the accounts of the users online banking systems. This allready happened in Norway around christmas, where hackers transferred several users' holdings to another norwegian customer's account. I think we'll see a lot more attacks like this one this year.
